PORTRAITS
Photographer Portait
The photographer I chose to research was Richard Avedon. I found this portrait he took of Ronald Regan when he was still a governor. The lighting in the portrait is very bright and seems to have one light coming directly from the left side of Regan thus causing the shadow on the right side of his face. Regan seems to be sitting at a slightly angled position and is making a stern face because it is a professional photograph. The background just seems to be an all white backdrop that Regan is up against. The photographer seems to be very close to Regan as the point of view is very up close to Regan's face. The mood seeming to be portrayed in the photo is that Regan will be a very strong leader and wants the people of the US to see him in that way.

Double Exposure
What images did you select for your double exposure? The first two images I selected were a portrait of Tara and combined her with a landscape of Purgatory Chasm in Sutton. The second two images were a portrait of Tara and the skyline of Boston. The third two images I chose were a portrait of Tara and a landscape of profile rock in Taunton.
How do the objects relate compositionally? The first images relate because it seems as se is staring up into the light and the trees as well as some leaves align with her face and hair, which make the effect very interesting and it blends really well. The second image she is reading a book and so it makes it seem like she is imagining in her head the skyline of Boston. The third images relate conceptually because the portrait of her holding a flower shows that they both relate to the environment.
How did you manipulate and modify each image? I modifying the first image by overlaying the picture of her face and changing the opacity down to about 56%. I then changed the image to black and white because I felt the images aligned better and the shadows created from the lower opacity created an interesting photo. I modified the second image by doing the same thing but i placed her in the center of the photo this time, which broke the rule of thirds, however, I feel being centered creates almost a dream effect like you're seeing into her mind. The third image I put her slightly to the right and again lowered the opacity, but it almost seems like she is placing the photo on the rock and she also blends very extravagantly with the sky.
What concept, idea or meaning does your double exposure convey? The first photo I feel conveys the meaning of a love for the outdoors, because of the way she's smiling slightly as she's staring up into the tree line. The second photo I feel shows a concept of a love for reading and how words on a page can be real in our minds, because we feel the imagery coming to life in our minds. The third photo I feel shows the meaning of how being one with nature is a good thing, because the flower composed with the skyline and the tree line of Taunton shows how beautiful nature can truly be.
